HSK 4 Exam Format
These practice papers use the older HSK 4 format: 100 questions for a full paper, approximately 105 minutes, and a pass mark of 180/300. Test 04 has 99 questions and Test 07 is a partial set. Check the format for your booked exam with your test centre.

What the 2026 Syllabus Demands
The revised HSK syllabus (《新版HSK考试大纲》) raises the bar at Level 4. Unlike HSK 3 which focuses on basic daily needs, HSK 4 requires handling "有一定复杂度" (a certain level of complexity) across 30 communicative tasks, grouped here into five themes:

New Grammar Patterns at Level 4
The official grammar syllabus adds significant complexity at Level 4. The patterns below are the highest-leverage ones to master before sitting the test:
- 把字句2 — four new structures (tentative, completed, quantified, modified)
- 被动句2 — using 叫/让 instead of just 被
- 兼语句2 — causative and evaluative sentences
- 比较句3 — "A不如B" and "跟…相比"
- 双重否定句 — for emphasis
- 复句 — concessive (尽管…但是), conditional (不管…都, 无论…都), hypothetical (要是…否则)

Listen for meaning, not just words
Listen before looking at the answer. During review, replay difficult sections and compare them with the available transcript. The 判断对错 section tests inference — what the speaker really means, not what they literally said. Train yourself to ask "what does this imply?" rather than "what did I hear?"

Fill-in-the-blank rewards collocations. Knowing 影响 means "influence" isn't enough — you need 对…产生影响. Sentence ordering follows structural templates: time/place → subject → action → result/comment.

The writing section asks you to build sentences from given words. Recognising common patterns (S+V+O+Result, Time-Place-Subject-Action) makes this section much faster. Drill the 100 essential sentences.

Use this eight-week example as a starting point if you already have an HSK 3 foundation. Adjust the pace to your available time and what your practice reveals; preparation time varies.
Try a practice set to find gaps, then review the reasons for each mistake. Revisit unfamiliar words in example sentences and retest them after a few days. Choose a pace you can maintain.
Focus on your weakest section. Listening weak? Replay audio and shadow dialogues. Reading weak? Drill grammar patterns. Writing difficult? Draft your own sentences, compare references, then rewrite the parts you could not explain.
Complete one practice set, review the mistakes, and revisit those question types before trying another. Track listening and reading accuracy separately from writing self-review; a practice percentage does not predict an official HSK result.
Using your practice results
Which exam format do these practice papers use?
The 19 practice papers use the older HSK 4 format. A full set has 45 listening, 40 reading and 15 writing questions; Test 04 and Test 07 are partial sets. Check the format of your booked exam with your test centre.
What does my practice percentage mean?
It is the percentage of listening and reading questions answered correctly, including skipped objective questions in the denominator. Writing is excluded. This percentage is not an official HSK score or a prediction of passing.
How is my writing checked?
Write your own sentence first. After finishing, compare it with the reference sentence and the available explanation. Other correct sentences are possible. The site saves drafts but does not automatically assess grammar, meaning or picture fit. Prompts without their source picture are labeled as word-only practice.
Can I return to my answers later?
When browser storage is available, unfinished answers and the last completed attempt for each test are saved in this browser on this device. Use Resume for unfinished work or Review saved answers for a completed attempt. Data does not sync between devices and can be lost if browser data is cleared. Copy important writing elsewhere.
Why are my earlier results labeled differently?
Earlier versions treated writing prompts as choice questions. Those percentages cannot be compared directly with objective-only accuracy. Old writing choices are not converted into written drafts.
Are the practice resources free?
The practice papers, answer references and self-study tools on this site are free to use without signing up. Teacher-led classes offered by Mandarin Zone are a separate service.
How should I use the eight-week plan?
Treat it as an example schedule for learners with an HSK 3 foundation. Preparation time varies. Use your mistakes and writing reviews to decide what needs more practice, then adjust the pace to your available time.
