Presents two aspects, reasons, or sides of a situation. Both clauses are equally weighted.
一方面 + aspect A, 另一方面 + aspect B

Yì fāngmiàn tā xiǎng qù liúxué, lìng yì fāngmiàn tā yòu shěbude líkāi jiārén.
On one hand he wants to study abroad; on the other, he can't bear to leave his family.
Two conflicting feelings of equal weight
这份工作一方面工资高，另一方面压力也大。
Zhè fèn gōngzuò yì fāngmiàn gōngzī gāo, lìng yì fāngmiàn yālì yě dà.
This job has a high salary on one hand, but also high pressure on the other.

一方面要保护环境，另一方面也要发展经济。
Yì fāngmiàn yào bǎohù huánjìng, lìng yì fāngmiàn yě yào fāzhǎn jīngjì.

✗ 一方面他很聪明，另一方面他考了第一名。
✓ 他不但很聪明，而且考了第一名。
Getting 1st place is a RESULT of being smart, not a parallel aspect. Use 不但…而且 for progressive results.
✗ 一方面下雨了，另一方面我没带伞。
✓ 因为下雨了，而且我没带伞，所以…
These are not two balanced aspects but a cause-effect chain.
Easily confused: 一方面…另一方面 = two equal sides. 不但…而且 = progressive (second is more important).
