13. 反问句 vs 真问句 — flip the literal answer
A 反问句 (rhetorical question) asks something to assert the OPPOSITE of the literal answer. If you treat it as a real question, you'll mark the wrong choice on listening and reading.
Rhetorical (intended meaning is the OPPOSITE):
✓ 难道你不知道吗? Nándào nǐ bù zhīdào ma? — Literal: "Could it be that you don't know?" Intended: "You DO know!" (assertive reproach)
Zhè jiàn shì zěnme néng bù gàosu wǒ ne? — Literal: "How could you not tell me?" Intended: "You SHOULD have told me."
Shéi huì yuànyì zuò zhè zhǒng shì ne? — Literal: "Who would be willing to do this?" Intended: "Nobody would." (rhetorical 谁 = no one)
Zhè nǎlǐ shì zhēn de? — Literal: "Where is this real?" Intended: "This is NOT real at all." (rhetorical 哪里 = denial)

Compare with 真问句 (real question, expects yes/no answer):
✓ 你知道吗? Nǐ zhīdào ma? — "Do you know?" (Genuinely asking — the speaker does not know your answer.)
The difference between this and 难道你不知道吗? is purely the speaker's intent + the rhetorical marker 难道. Without 难道, 怎么呢, 谁呢, 哪里 — it's a real question.

HSK 4 quick test: If you can answer the literal question with "yes/no" naturally, it's a real question. If the speaker clearly expects the opposite of the literal answer, it's a 反问句. Listening Part 3 — tone often rises sharply on the rhetorical word When you hear that rise, flip the literal answer.
