Mood adverbs are tiny words with outsized exam weight. These two traps — 差点儿 polarity and 千万’s mandatory imperative partner — appear in listening comprehension and 排词成句 every single session. Part of the 15 high-frequency HSK 4 traps collection.
P1 audit高频
1. 差点儿 polarity — wanted vs unwanted action
差点儿 + V always means the action did NOT happen — but the meaning of 差点儿没 + V depends on whether the action was wanted. This is the single most-tested HSK 4 adverb-polarity trap.
① UNWANTED action (迟到, 摔倒, 丢, 撞): ✓ 我差点儿迟到了。 — I almost was late → I was NOT late (lucky).
✓ 我差点儿没摔倒。 — I almost didn't fall → I did NOT fall (same result; 没 is just an intensifier, no polarity flip).
② WANTED action (考上, 赢, 找到, 完成, 赶上): ✓ 我差点儿考上了。 — I almost passed → I did NOT pass (regret).
✓ 我差点儿没考上。 — I almost failed to pass → I DID pass (relief). 没 flips polarity.
✓ 我差点儿没赶上车。 — I almost didn't catch the bus → I DID catch it (relief). 赶上 is wanted; 没 flips polarity.
HSK 4 quick test: Ask "did the speaker want X?" If YES, then 没 flips polarity (wanted-action 差点儿没 = relief, action happened). If NO, 没 makes no real difference. Listening Part 3 loves hiding 差点儿没考上 in a passage and asking whether the speaker passed — answer: yes.
2. 千万 must pair with an imperative (要 / 别 / 不要 / 不能)
千万 (qiānwàn) is a mood adverb that intensifies a strong instruction or warning. It cannot stand alone with a regular declarative — it must combine with an imperative form (要, 不要, 别, 不能, 一定要).
✗ 你千万小心。 — Missing imperative marker. 小心 alone is a request, not flagged as urgent.
✓ 你千万要小心。 Nǐ qiānwàn yào xiǎoxīn. — "You must absolutely be careful." 要 carries the imperative.
✓ 你千万别迟到! Nǐ qiānwàn bié chídào! — "Whatever you do, don't be late!" 别 is the negative imperative.
✓ 这件事千万不能告诉别人。 Zhè jiàn shì qiānwàn bù néng gàosu biérén. — "You absolutely must not tell anyone about this." 不能 is the negative obligation.
HSK 4 排词成句 (Q86-95) signal: If 千万 appears in the word card, you must place 要/别/不要/不能 next to it. Without the imperative partner, the sentence is ungrammatical and gets zero points.
考上 is a WANTED action, so 差点儿没 + V flips polarity → the action DID happen. He passed (with relief). This is the single most-tested 差点儿 trap on HSK 4 listening.
千万 is a mood adverb that needs an imperative partner: 要 / 别 / 不要 / 不能. 你千万小心 lacks the imperative; 我千万去过北京 misuses 千万 with a declarative experience marker (过). Only 你千万要小心 is grammatical.
