HSK 4 Test-Taking Strategy

HSK 4 Reading Comprehension /

Read the question first, then hunt for the answer location

Section: Reading Part 3 /
Questions: Q66-85
Format: 20 questions on short passages (some passages have 2 questions)

HSK 4 reading Part 3 has 20 marks across short passages. The single most powerful technique: read the QUESTION before the passage. Now you know what fact you're hunting, and you can scan the passage in 30 seconds instead of reading every word.

5 Strategies for HSK 4 Reading Comprehension / 5

1

Question-first, scan-second, read-third

Spend 5 seconds on the question stem. Identify what you're looking for (a reason / a number / a name / a main idea). Then scan the passage for that signal, then read the surrounding 1-2 sentences carefully. This is 3x faster than linear reading.

Example Question asks 'X 为什么 Y?' → scan for 因为/由于/原因 in the passage. → read first + last sentence.
2

Master the 4 question types and their answer locations

(1) Main idea (主要谈/告诉我们什么) → first or last sentence. (2) Detail (具体什么时候/谁/多少) → middle of passage, look for the keyword. (3) Inference (可以知道X什么) → multiple sentences, find consistent picture. (4) Vocabulary (X 的意思是什么) → re-read the sentence with X.

Example Inference: passage describes a person's actions/job → infer profession. Detail: scan for the specific number/name asked.
3

Eliminate options containing words NOT in the passage

If an option uses a word that never appears in the passage AND isn't a synonym of anything in it, that option is wrong 90% of the time. HSK 4 distractors are usually built from passage-related words.

Example Passage about 茶文化 (tea culture). Option D mentions 咖啡 — eliminate.
4

Watch for synonym substitution in the correct answer

The correct option rarely uses the EXACT words from the passage — it usually uses synonyms. Train your eye for: 喜欢 ↔ 爱好, 工资 ↔ 收入, 难过 ↔ 伤心, 改变 ↔ 改善.

Example Passage: '他每月赚 8000 元'. Correct option: '他的收入还可以' (赚 → 收入, paraphrased).
5

For 2-question passages, do Q1 (main idea) AFTER Q2 (detail)

When a passage has 2 questions, the second is usually about main idea or theme. Doing the detail question first forces you to read the passage closely; the main idea then becomes obvious. Reverse-order approach saves 20%+ time.

Example Q1 asks the lesson, Q2 asks a detail. Do Q2 first (it forces close reading), then Q1 (main idea is now clear from your close reading).

Practice Questions / 练习题

Try these 3 practice items in HSK 4 format. Apply the strategies above and check your reasoning.

Q1
Why: After 但是 (turn) and 其实 (real point), the author argues self-cooking is better — direct main-idea signal at the end.
Q2
Detail question — scan for 每周/次 keywords.
Q3
Inference question — pick the option that the passage directly supports.
